What are the origins of KiVa?
Originally, KiVa was an anti-bullying program, developed by the University of Turku in Finland. The effectiveness of KiVa has been proved by a large number of studies in different countries all over the world, including the Netherlands. Research about KiVa and its effects is something that continues to be relevant. Additionally, KiVa is very well suited as a programme to create positive groups. Recent studies show KiVa has positive effects on raising empathy among children, schoolwellbeing, trust in classmates and the schoolclimate. In addition, a cost-benefit analysis of KiVa shows that KiVa is worth its investment, in short and long-term contexts.
KiVa is a program that is designed to be a permanent part of the school culture. It is something that is not only relevant inside the classroom, but also in the schoolyard and at home. That’s why the program is constantly researched, developed and expanded to further respond to societal developments and requirements for schools.
